Compulsory School Age Cutoff Date
In California, compulsory school attendance is required for all children ages 6-18. The school year in which a six year old must start school depends upon his or her birthday. For the new school year 2014-2015, a child is required to be enrolled in school if he or she turns six years old on or before September 1, 2014.
September 1st will remain the age cutoff date for all future school years. For example, a child who turns six on or after September 2, 2014 does not need to be formally enrolled in school for another year, which is not until the first month of the next school year (2015-2016). A new school year typically begins in either August or September.
If you are conducting your own private school in your home, you will need to file a private school affidavit this year and every year in which you teach your compulsory-age children in your home-based private school (private home schooling).
You may, of course, teach your children who are not yet compulsory attendance age at home. They simply are not formally a part of your private school and are not to be included in the number of enrolled students indicated on the affidavit form.
